Property in Kefalonia
Property investment in Kefalonia
The beautiful island of Kefalonia is the largest and most popular of the group of Greek islands which are scattered throughout the clear blue waters of the Ionian Sea. Pure white sand beaches, clear blue waters and a superb climate all combine in what is one of Greece’s most spectacular tourist destinations.
Its beauty lay relatively hidden until relatively recently, despite the steady increases in tourist visitors to the island. This changed however, and the island was catapulted onto the global stage, when it played a starring role as the picturesque setting for the Hollywood blockbuster film, ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.’
Today, tourism is a focus of Kefalonia, and indeed the island has something to offer all visitors, regardless of age or budget. From picturesque traditional fishing villages, historical museums and monasteries through to the superb beaches and bay which can be found scattered around the shores of this beautiful island.
As one would expect from an island affectionately known as the ‘Jewel of the Ionian,’ the revenues generated from tourism play an integral part in the economy of the island. In fact, it is this strong market for tourism in Kefalonia, and indeed throughout Greece, which has prompted the recent increase in investor interest in the region. Greece, and its associated islands were estimated to have generated approximately €40 billion in tourist revenue in 2007, a figure which is expected to increase by around 4% per year until 2017. With revenues in the region increasing at this rate, it is highly likely that developer and investor interest in Kefalonia will increase considerably in the next few years.
