Modern day Fethiye's ancient past creates appeal

 

Stunning pools in FethiyeThe modern-day city of Fethiye on Turkey's beautiful southern coast is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. A busy and thriving tourist resort, Fethiye attracts a large number of visitors each year from overseas. Whilst it is hard to dispute that the focus of the appeal of Fethiye lies within its beautiful surroundings and warm Mediterranean climate, a large number of people are attracted to the region through its rich and illustrious history which dates back to ancient times. Situated on a peninsula previously known as Lycia, Fethiye was once known as Tel mesons and was a prominent and popular centre of prophecy. Just a short distance from the town centre of Fethiye lies a number of popular ancient ruins including a Roman theatre, a fortress and even some rock tombs.

 

Indeed it is worth noting that is throughout the region there are a large number of ancient ruins, and whilst many people associate Greece as being the home of the ancients, is in fact Turkey were the majority of the ancient ruins can in fact be found today.

 

Founded in the 11th century, the fortress in Fethiye signifies web modern-day city was founded all those years ago. Here, sections of the original city walls can be seen which date all away back to ancient Roman times. Repaired during the 15th century by the Rhodesian Knights, the fortress went on to be used as a naval base for many years afterwards.

 

The ancient ruins surrounding Fethiye also knowledge the considerable emphasis which was placed on the performing arts during ancient times. Situated opposite the main key in Fethiye town centre, the ancient theatre was originally built way back in the second century on the remains of the original Greek version. Estimated in 1993 and exhaustive restoration project was undertaken to excavate the remains.

 

Looking beyond modern-day Fethiye, it is difficult to comprehend that the region has indeed been settled since the early 13th century. Originally known as Telmessos during the Lycian times, Fethiye has since been populated by other factions including the Romans.

 

As mentioned earlier, it is relatively easy to see signs of the city's ancient past as you drive through today. The ancient theatre just off the main harbour area, the rock tombs and other ancient ruins are all signs indicating to the region's rich and illustrious history. Today there are signs that tourism looks set to bring in visitors and residents from further afield. A range of superb new property developments have been launched throughout Fethiye and the surrounding regions of Olu Deniz, Hisaronu and Gocek of all attracted residents from further afield many of whom see Fethiye is ancient history as a key attraction when choosing to locate here.
